Dir. Wayne Wang. USA, 2020, 86 mins. From acclaimed director Wayne Wang (Smoke, The Joy Luck Club), Coming Home Again is an emotional, intimate family drama about a mother, a son, and the burden of family expectations, based on a personal essay by Chang-rae Lee. The film takes place over the course of one day as Chang-rae (Justin Chon) returns to his family home in San Francisco to care for his ailing mother (Jackie Chung) and attempts to prepare a traditional Korean New Year’s Eve dinner. Wanting nothing more than to fulfill his role as supportive son, Chang-rae is faced with the dilemma of living with the permanent scars of unresolved family sacrifice or opening new wounds as the shadow of cancer falls on their lives. Premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. An Outsider Pictures and Strand Releasing release. View trailer.

“Gently explores the shared language of love between mother and son.”Screen International

“An elegant chamber piece that deals with big issues — life, death, family, guilt, grief — in a beautifully austere way, Coming Home Again rarely raises its voice, but it cuts deeply.” —Steve Pond, The Wrap
