Little Shop of Horrors
Dir. Frank Oz. US, 1986, 94 mins. With Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Steve Martin, Tisha Campbell, and the voice of Levi Stubbs. This charming horror comedy musical with rock, doo wop, and R&B melodies has delighted generations of diverse audiences. Based on the 1982 off-Broadway musical inspired by Roger Corman’s 1960 low-budget movie, the film follows Seymour (Moranis), a down-and-out flower-shop assistant who becomes a sensation when he discovers a venus flytrap-like plant that craves fresh human blood. Little Shop of Horrors is an irreverent marvel, featuring Oscar-nominated special effects and toe-tapping songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, who would go on to write the music for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

Beetlejuice
Dir. Tim Burton. US, 1988, 92 mins. With Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara. Though the married Maitlands (Baldwin and Davis) are killed early on in Tim Burton’s comic ghost classic, they can’t seem to abandon this mortal coil, taking up residence again in their beloved Connecticut home. The new owners, save their moody teen daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder), are a boorish lot so the Maitlands make every attempt to frighten them away. When the pair proves to be not scary enough, they call upon rogue poltergeist Beetlejuice (Keaton), whose frenetic energy and desire to scare take a darker turn. Burton’s wildly creative eighties comedy features one hilarious, inventive scene after another and some terrific stop-motion special effects.
