Hogg continues her extraordinary diptych about creativity, loss, and coming into one’s own as a person of the world. In the aftermath of her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic and manipulative older man, Julie begins to untangle her fraught love for him in making her graduation film, sorting fact from his elaborately constructed fiction. The Souvenir Part II transcends the halting particulars of everyday life to create a singular, alchemic mix of memoir and fantasy while remaining grounded in a very particular evocation of its maker’s past.
